Air Dry Clay

Small Child with Large Glasses
After-School-Play-In-Clay-4.webp

Recommended for TK-6th grade. This class requires a room where storage space for clay projects is available. Clay is messy, a classroom sink is highly desirable for clean-up but not necessary.

The course follows a robust syllabus with specific objectives.

In this course, students learn hand-building techniques through demonstrations in coil, slab and pinch pot construction methods to make objects that are meaningful to them. Students work with non-toxic air dry clay to learn a new art medium, while developing a strong sense of confidence. Instructors create an atmosphere of experimentation and a healthy growth mind-set by showing that “mistakes” can be squashed down and re-shaped again; an authentic creative experience. Problem solving and critical thinking skills are enhanced in this atmosphere. Benefits of working in clay include sensory exploration to support focus and concentration, the development of fine and gross motor skills, as well as stress-release while promoting social skills.
